Behind the extraordinary landmark of 238 Castlereagh Street, and nestled in the heart of Sydney’s CBD lies Events by Alpha. Majestic, luxurious and opulent, Alpha combines architectural elegance, fantastic service and delicious Greek cuisine.

The History of 238 Castlereagh Street
The foundation stone for this historic building was laid in 1875, by Dr Barker, the Anglican bishop of Sydney. Prior to this, the site was the location of small residences shops and businesses. The building was opened in 1877 as a Protestant Hall.
One moment of significance occurred on 30 November, 1878, when our national anthem “Advance Australia Fair”, was heard publicly for the first time during a Highland society concert held in the Hall.
The building’s most recent transformation began in 2013 when the current owners, the Hellenic Club, opened the Alpha Restaurant, followed by Events by Alpha and the Gallery in 2016.
In 2021 the Club was renovated to include The Grand event space which opened in 2022.
Events by Alpha Ceremony & Reception Spaces
Couples can choose from Alpha’s two award-winning event spaces — The Gallery or The Grand — for a spectacular ceremony and/or reception experience. Both areas have exposed brickwork, 5-metre-high ceilings, and Victorian era structural character.
The Gallery, on Level 1, is licensed for up to 200 guests.
The Grand, on Level 2, is licensed for up to 250 guests.
